Magic facts about sleep
Why sleep is so important for human health and wellbeing
Sleep is a naturally recurring state of mind and body, characterized by altered consciousness, relatively inhibited sensory activity, reduced muscle activity and inhibition of nearly all voluntary muscles during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and reduced interactions with surroundings. Human sleep needs vary by age and amongst individuals; sleep is considered to be adequate when there is no daytime sleepiness or dysfunction. Researchers have found that sleeping 6–7 hours each night correlates with longevity and cardiac health in humans (source: Wikipedia).
Human sleep knows four sleep stages
- REM (Rapid Eye Movement)
This is what happens in each stage
In this stage your brain waves begin to slow down and you might experience a slight muscle twitching. Typically heartbeat, breathing and eye movements slow down while brainwaves enter alpha and light theta.
Now your body starts to further relax and body core temperature drops 1-2 degrees. Your heartbeat and breathing slows down even more in this phase. Brainwaves reach deeper theta.
In this phase dreaming occurs while your arm and leg muscles become paralyzed to prevent you from acting out your dream. Your short term memory cleasn up, blood leaves the brain and cerebral spinal fluid washes in and out to cleanse toxins. Brainwave activity apperas close to being awake while your heart rate and breathing may increase during this stage of sleep.
During this phase your muscles start to recover and grow. Also, muscles do receive more blood supply while receiving more oxygen – and important fact for muscle recovery. Human growth hormone (HGH) gets released stimulating cell reproduction and regeneration. Hormone regulation starts, your blood pressure drops. Your energy levels are starting to get rebalanced.
